Brewing #1 - Ginger Bug
This is my first attempt at making a ginger bug (ginger beer starter) for making naturally fermented and carbonated ginger beer.
Ingredients
150g of organic root ginger (+30g per additional feed)
10 tbsp of caster or fine cane sugar (+2 tbsp per additional feed)
500ml of room temperature water
Method
#Ensure everything is clean and sterile before starting
Add the 500ml of water to a medium (1-1.2 litre) jar
coarsely chop 30g of organic root ginger and add to the water
add 2 tbsp of sugar to the water and ginger and stir until the sugar has dissolved
Either put the lid on loosely or cover with a fine cloth like a tea towel and Leave for 24 hours
Repeat on Days 2 - 5 (Feed)- add 30g of ginger and 2 tbsp of sugar to the mixture and stir until the sugar has dissolved
After 3 days you should see small bubbles on the surface of liquid
After 5 days there should be a lot of small bubbles and the ginger bug is now ready to use.
Either keep at room temperature and feed daily or seal the jar and keep in the refrigerator and feed every week.
